Our Brand Story
The em dash (—) is a versatile and often underutilised punctuation mark, which is usually the width of the lowercase letter “m”. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it can “function like a comma, a colon, or parenthesis.” The Oxford English Dictionary dates its use as far back as 1830 which, since 2013, has extended to include “indicating an abrupt change or end to a thought or speech (‘What the—?’), among others.”
Our multipotential founder, Nurene Jassiem, chose the company name Em Dash Media because of the diverse skills she has acquired over more than 20 years in various industries. The company’s offering is extensive and ranges from editorial to business consulting and specialist clerical services.

Meet Nurene
My journey in media and communications began at 15 when I became involved in community radio. There I developed presenting, producing, and sound engineering skills. My philanthropic and professional work has always reflected my passion for communications and storytelling.
I have consulted on several projects that empower youth across South Africa. As a survivor of bullying, I narrate my journey of living with Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) and Major Depression by delivering motivational talks and writing occasional blogs.
Beyond my advocacy work, I have a deep passion for the arts and have collaborated with some of the most talented entertainers and artists in South Africa, by contributing my unique skills and perspective.
Furthermore, I have a wealth of experience in comprehensive communications. I have worked with a prestigious internationally renowned functional art company, an omnichannel homeware retailer in Southern Africa, a Big Four professional services firm, and a prominent South African faith-based, socio-welfare, and educational organisation – to mention a few.
